Introduction to School of Pharmacy Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology
The School of Pharmacy of Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology was founded in 1971, whichwasthe earliest pharmacy school in Central and South China, and has trained more than 8,000 pharmacy talents of all kinds over the past 50 years.
Academic system
The School now has 6 departments: Traditional Chinese Medicine and Natural Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Biopharmacy, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Smart Pharmaceutical Administration, and 2centersfor experimental teaching and analytical testing. In addition, it has a post-doctoral mobile station in pharmacy. It was ranked A+ by Times Higher Education subject rating in 2024.
Faculty
The School has 95 faculty members, including 30 professors and 40 associate professors.
Research
The School hastwo national research platforms: Wuhan Comprehensive New Drug Research and Development Technology Platform andtheNational Nanomedicine Engineering and Technology Research Center, which are dedicated to the creation of major new drugs. It also has the Hubei Provincial Key Laboratory of Natural Drug Chemistry and Resource Evaluation, Hubei Provincial Engineering and Technology Research Center of Modern Drug Delivery System, Wuhan Natural Drug Engineering Center, and the Research Institute of Biomedicine of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
In recent years, the college has won 7 national “major new drug creation” special projects, 1 863 project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 key research and development project, 8 provincial key research and development projects, and 15 scientific and technological awards above the provincial level. In the past five years, the number of SCI papers published by the School has increased year by year, and the quality of the papers has been significantly improved, with a total of more than 800 SCI papers published (including 91 papers with IF>10 and more than 600 Q1 papers), including Cell Discov, PNAS, Nat. Commun. Angew. Chem., J. Control. Release, J. Med. Chem., Nat. Prod. Rep., Anal. Chem., Nucleic Acids Res. etc., and 14 highly cited papers.
The School has established long-term cooperative relationships with more than 10 pharmaceutical enterprises, built new drug R&D platforms, carried out a number of new drug R&D projects, and provided technical services for a number of pharmaceutical enterprises. We have successfully developed 23 new drugs (including 9 new drugs of Class II) and transferred them to pharmaceutical enterprises, which have gained great social and economic benefits, and there are still 5 new drugs of Class I and more than 10 drugs of other categories under development.
Talent training
The School actively explores thepersonalizedcultivation modecenteredon students, and it vigorously implements the undergraduate teaching quality and teaching reform project. The establishment and practice of the innovative talent cultivation system of ‘pharmacy scientists’ was awarded the second prize of the National Teaching Achievements. 2002 saw the founding of Biopharmacy Class (National Talent Cultivation Base of Life Science and Technology), and 2012 saw the founding of the first international pharmacy student class in China. In 2020, the experimental class of pharmacy enlightenment was launched, and the bachelor, master and doctoral degree through training was implemented, and in 2022, the new undergraduate program of clinical pharmacy was launched. In recent years, teachers of the School have chief-edited 7 national planning textbooks of pharmacy.
International cooperation
The international exchanges of the School are becoming more and more extensive and in-depth. It has signed inter-institutional cooperation agreements with the University of Marburg in Germany, the University of Iowa in the United States, the University of Rhode Island, etc. to set up international joint laboratories, toorganizehigh-level international academic conferences jointly, and to carry out exchanges between faculty and students actively. The first international pharmacy student class in China was launched here, and more than 200 international students from more than 20 countries have been recruited so far. The ‘Traditional Chinese Medicine Summer Program’ has attracted students from all over the world to participate, expanding the international influence of the discipline.
The cooperation with the University of Birmingham inorganizingan undergraduate pharmacy program has been approved by the Ministry of Education of China, and the first batch of students will be enrolled from September 2025 onwards.
Social services
The School has built the “National Training Center for Licensed Pharmacists in Hubei Province” jointly with Hubei FDA, and the Training Center for Licensed Pharmacists is one of the first batch of 17 national training centers for licensed pharmacists announced by SFDA Licensed Pharmacist Qualification Center, which provides more than 40,000 times of classroom service for licensed pharmacists in Hubei Province every year. At the same time, the training center provides training services for many pharmaceutical companies and drug service regulators across the country, and has made important contributions to improving the business level and overall quality of pharmacy practitioners.
