On July 22, 2022, the week-long summer courseChinese Material Medicine: Bencao and Quality Evaluationhosted by the "2022 Tongji Summer School (TJSS2022)" platform was successfully completed. ProfessorChun-Tao Cheof Pharmacognosy from the University of Illinois at Chicago and Associate ProfessorJinbo Fangof the School of Pharmacy jointly taught this summer course. The course adopted online and offline synchronous teaching, which was taught in full English. Nearly one hundred students worldwide were broadcast live synchronously through the zoom platform. Students in Qiming Bachelor-Master-Doctor Experimental Class for the Pharmacy specialty participated in offline teaching.
Students-centered Learning & Teaching is a teaching method that focuses on students' development, learning, and learning outcomes and pays attention to the training of students' high-level cognitive abilities, such as the application, analysis, evaluation, and creation of knowledge. The core content of pharmacognosy course teaching was "Quality evaluation of Chinese Material Medicine and exploration of new resources". Therefore, this summer course focused on the core theme of quality evaluation of Chinese material medicine, combining with the construction of the Pharmacognosy in Qiming Bachelor-Master-Doctor Experimental Class for the Pharmacy specialty, and adopted the reverse design method to carry out the design of curriculum teaching matrix. This course guided students to learn the representative herbal works in the history of the development of traditional Chinese medicine and the evolution of quality evaluation of traditional Chinese medicine so that students can establish the mindset and method of quality evaluation of the traditional Chinese medicine system. By learning about the development trend of quality control of traditional Chinese medicine and herbal medicine in the world through the drafting summary and case study of the pharmacopoeia of China and the United States, students established the dialectical thinking and systematic-development view of quality control of traditional Chinese medicine.
Through various ways, such as pre-class literature reading, lectures, and discussions, students learned the cutting-edge knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine and quality evaluation, broadened an international perspective, deeply comprehended the changes and essence of traditional Chinese medicine books and records, mastered the specific contents of the pharmacopoeia and its related entries, and felt the important significance and profound connotation of the quality evaluation of traditional Chinese medicine. With heated discussions and collision of thinking sparks in class, students' oral English expression ability, autonomous learning ability, and team spirit were greatly improved. In more than 20 teaching feedbacks towards the course, students thought highly of the course, appreciated Professor Chun-Tao Che and ProfessorJinbo Fangfor their wonderful teaching and patient mentoring, and expressed that they had benefited a lot. They gained professional knowledge in the rich content and the power of joint progress in the interaction.
This is the first time that the School of Pharmacy has participated in the Tongji Summer School project sponsored by the Office of International Affairs, and it’s also a preliminary exploration of the reform of pharmacognosy teaching. Later, the teaching team will be organized to continue to update the teaching content, set credits, and create an upgraded version, making positive contributions to the training of pharmaceutical professionals and the construction of courses. At the same time, this course has been supported by the teaching research project of Huazhong University of Science and Technology [Course design and practice of "Pharmacognosy" based on SC (Student-Centeredness) theory of Qiming Bachelor-Master-Doctor Experimental Class for the Pharmacy specialty,No. 2021156].
